Armed Robber Steals Purse at DeSoto Square Mall Parking Lot, Deputies Say
The man was armed with a silver handgun when he took a woman's purse Wednesday afternoon, according to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.
An armed man robbed a woman of her purse Wednesday afternoon in the JC Penney parking lot at DeSoto Square mall, authorities said.
The victim was preparing to get out of her vehicle and go into the department store around 1 p.m. Wednesday when she was approached by a man with a silver handgun who ordered her to hand over her purse, the Manatee County Sheriff's Office reports.
The 61-year-old woman struggled with the suspect until he reached into her car and took the purse off the front seat, authorities said. The suspect fled to the west side of JC Penney, where he got into the passenger side of a silver, 2000s model Chevy Malibu that took off.
The victim, who was not injured, drove to the sheriff's office operations center nearby, where she flagged down a deputy.
The suspect is described as being between 6-foot and 6-foot-2, skinny with short hair and thick-lensed glasses.

This is why I usually avoid going anywhere near DeSoto Square Mall, with the occasional exception of grabbing some delicious Chick-fil-A or a movie at the theater. In those cases I should note that I opt to carry my "big gun" loaded with Hornady Critical Defense and an extended magazine. And yes, I am a concealed weapons licience holder, as you (assuming you are not a criminal) should be too if you value your life in this town overrun with criminals and a police force incapable of controlling them.

Amen!!!! what's worse is the sheriff's department is incapable and located right across the street from the freaking mall! Hello 2 years ago an elderly lady was beaten brutally right in broad daylight across the street from the Sheriff's Department at this mall!!!! Manatee County Sheriff's Department need to man up, start fighting crime it's ridiculous, these criminals are not afraid at all of our pathetic Sheriff's Department! Explain to me how are you have sheriffs that are 300 pounds! Like what are they gonna do they cant chase a criminal....and people will not respect them if they clearly dont respect themselves!

Excellent observation about the Sheriff's Office being in such close proximity to the crime scene. Amazing - these criminals can get away Scot-free right in the back yard of the police! Clearly, Sheriff Stube is failing miserably in his duties to the citizens of Manatee County. You can't blame me though - I voted for the other guy.

Obviously you don't care for the Sherriff's office.

Dave, what I care for is the safety of my family and our right to live in a free society. Criminals have overrun my hometown and the Sheriff's office is clearly not as effective as they need to be, as is evidenced virtually every day in the endless crime reports of escalating severity. I have no grudge against the Sheriff's office. I am merely pointing out that they are not adequately fulfilling their responsibilities to keep us safe, therefore good citizens need to "up the ante" to ensure their family's safety by any means legally necessary, such as obtaining a concealed weapons license as I have done.

the reason they cannot do their jobs is because the are shortstaffed on the road due to being unerpaid so alot of our road deputies have left and gone to other agenceys

So it seems you agree with me that the police are not capable of keeping the good citizens of Manatee County safe. Whatever the excuse may be is not nearly as important as the fact that criminals have created a blight on our community and until law enforcement officials have gained the upper hand, good citizens need to take measures to protect their families, themselves, and their property - whatever those measures may entail.

The police are very capable but remember budget cuts are not their fault. There are only so many deputies to man this county and at this point they are understaffed.
I think that everybody should take measures to protect themselves and their property even if the police are fully staffed.

Everyone's budget seems to have been cut. Good leadership, a core of quality people, and a culture of creativity can go surprisingly far in such situations. As in business, government should strive to eliminate waste and continually make improvements in every aspect of their operation. Failure to do so results in the pathetic situation we find ourselves in right now in Manatee County with crime running rampant on our streets and into our homes. Worse times are on the horizon, and additional budget cuts are bound to come, so will we just keep making excuses and remain complacient, or will we actually do something about it?

You said it Kelly! Very capable, but county will not pay for more police force!

...which is exactly why we need better leadership in our law enforcement that can find ways to do more with less. It's being done in successful businesses every day, so there is no reason it can't be done in government too. Time to quit making excuses and do what needs to be done!

I too live in Manatee county. I hear a lot about the Police, what about DeSota Mall's responsibility to it customers. Palms Theater, off 301 have off duty officers on the property. Why doesn't DeSota Mall do the same to protect the customers of their Mall?

Excellent point Shawna. Hopefully DeSoto Square Mall's new owners (as I believe it was sold recently) will take that under consideration if they wish their investment to be fruitful.
I still wonder why the "on duty" police officers can't be more effective. We're all already paying for them (with our taxes), so why should we then have to pay them again for a job they were incapable of doing the first time? Perhaps private security would be better, and eliminate any conflict of interest concerns.

It almost appears as though Desoto Mall wants to go out of business. They can't seem to understand that their parking lot is empty because no one wants to go shopping with wannabee gangstas running into you and acting like savages.

No, but it would be an excellent location to build a new super-sized jail to house all of our criminals in Manatee County that plague our streets. They wouldn't have to take them far...haha

The apartment building I live in has recently been invaded by what appears to be a group of crack dealers. There are constantly different cars coming and going, day and night, parking where ever they please and generally being obnoxious to everyone else that lives here. Some of the things I see coming and going look like black concentration camp victims, with dusty, dirty looking bodies and clothes. If they are not crack heads they're missing a hell of a chance. The apartment where these people live constantly has rap "music" of the vilest sort being played at maximum volume and someone is constantly cussing and screaming at the top of their lungs. Then there's the constant coughing and the strange smoke coming from their balcony. The Manatee County Sheriff's Department, located only about a mile east of here, (BOTL, think about it) admits there "might be a problem" but do they do anything about it? Don't be ridiculous! You can take the gang banger out of the ghetto but then they will just turn where ever they move to into the ghetto.
